Ways to Live Green

So, you don't think the little things can make a difference?  Not true!  Here's a list of just a few of the many, many things you can do to help the environment.  They'll have a real impact.

Start with one.  When that becomes second nature, pick another one.  It's that simple to live green!

Waste Not, Want Not

  • Take a five minute shower.
  • Reduce unnecessary packaging. Reuse materials whenever possible. Recycle everything you can.
  • Buy a reusable water bottle.
  • Use washable food containers instead of disposable plastic wrap and bags.
  • Use cloth napkins and towels instead of paper.
  • Take reusable bags with you whenever you go shopping.
  • Buy recycled paper, use both sides, and think twice before you print.

Save Your Energy

  • Walk, bike, or use public transportation instead of driving.
  • Shut off lights, computers, and other electronic equipment when you're not using them.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).
  • Put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat.
  • Use a fan instead of air conditioning.

For Health's Sake

  • Buy locally grown and/or organic produce.
  • Reduce the amount of animal products you eat.
  • Start composting your kitchen and yard waste.
  • Grow only native plants and don't use pesticides, fertilizers, or chemicals.
  • Use natural soaps and cleaning products.

Speak Up

  • Write a letter to an elected official (the president, senators, mayors, etc.) about an environmental issue.
  • Join an environmental club.
  • Support a local science institution, such as a zoo, aquarium, botanical garden, or nature center.
