The Tagging of Pacific Predators (TOPP) site allows you to track 22 different species of top predators that roam the Pacific Ocean. WWF operates in more than 100 countries working for a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.  There is a Take Action section as well as an Education site.

Service-Learning

City Year is an AmeriCorps program that engages 17- to 24-year-olds for a demanding year of full-time community service in fourteen national locations. http://www.cityyear.org

Kids for Community helps children and teens understand service-learning, find volunteer opportunities in New York City, and obtain funding for a project. http://www.kidsforcommunity.org

Learn and Serve, developed by the Corporation for National and Community Service, describes service-learning and resources, awards, scholarships, and opportunities to make a difference.

Founded in 1983, the National Youth Leadership Council has been a leader in service-learning. The NYLC helps schools and communities engage in active learning and service and hosts the annual National Service-Learning Conference.

Each spring, the Association for Women in Science Educational Foundation awards up to $1,000 to female high school seniors who plan to study science in college. Applicants must have a 3.75 GPA and a combined SAT score of 1200.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships offers awards of $1,000 to juniors and seniors who are recognized by school officials for their service to their community.

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes recognizes young people ages 8 to 18 who have shown leadership and courage in public service to people and our planet.  Barron Prize winners each receive $2,000 to be used for their higher education or for their service project.

At Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) residential summer science camps, you can explore the mountains, forests, and seashore to learn about science and nature outside of the classroom. Scholarships are available.

Smith College Summer Science & Engineering Program offers a 4-week summer program for high school students to “do” science and engineering in a “girls-only” setting. Financial aid is available.

The Student Conservation Association offers two programs for high school students. Conservation Crews are groups of 15- to 19-year-olds working during summer vacation building trails, restoring lands, and exploring the outdoors with no tuition. Urban Initiatives offers high school youth in metropolitan areas year-round outdoor field trips, community service projects, and weekend excursions in and around the cities in which they live.

The Volvo Adventure Prize is given to young people ages 10-16 who devise an action plan to help their environment in one of five categories: biodiversity, consumption, water, transportation, and pollution.

Young Naturalist Awards are given to twelve students, grades 7-12. Applicants plan and participate in an “exhibition” in their local community, and share observations, research, analysis, and interpretations in writing and visuals.
